USA Swimming Ignored Convicted Child Sex Abuser Coach Joe Weber

Coach Joe Weber Terminated

In a case that symbolizes the dysfunction inside USA Swimming, it is being reported that "consultant" swim coach Joe Weber of the YMCA powerhouse team in Somerset Valley, New Jersey has been terminated after it was discovered that he spent 5 years in prison after pleading guilty to having oral sex with a 14-year old girl. Despite his past history, Weber in close contact with minors for nearly six years. The Somerset Valley YMCA Swim Team is also a USA Swimming registered club. Weber was employed as a swim coach at the Germantown Academy Aquatics Club at the time of the incident, which is a USA Swimming club as well. The Germantown Academy is where Richard Shoulberg, president of the American Swimming Coaches Association (ASCA), is Aquatics Director. A USA Swimming spokesperson told the swimming blog, swimswam.com, that Weber was never a USA Swimming registered coach.

Furthermore, Weber's name is not on the USA Swimming list of banned coaches. The list was updated in mid-August. The Weber story was reported at the end of July by the New Jersey media.
