Quicksilver Swim Coach Timothy Nguyen Arrested

Failure to report in a timely manner allows Nguyen to continue coaching at Pioneer High School

San Jose Quicksilver swim coach and USA Swimming-affiliated coach Timothy Nguyen is facing child sex abuse charges following his arrest for inappropriate sexual conduct with at least three victims and possibly more. Meanwhile, San Jose police are reportedly concerned about the amount of time it took swim officials to notify law enforcement.

It appears that coach Timothy Nguyen left the club in March. At the beginning of April, the Quicksilver coaching staff and USA Swimming had knowledge of Timothy Nguyen's sexual misconduct. Yet San Jose police were not informed of the sexual misconduct until May 30th.

“They will not do what’s right unless they are absolutely forced to,” stated attorney Robert Allard. “They basically hid it.” In California, coaches are mandatory reporters, which means that they must notify CPS or law enforcement immediately upon learning of suspected sex abuse. By failing to report in a timely manner, Nguyen was allowed to continue coaching at Pioneer High School.

San Jose police stated that Nguyen had an ongoing texting relationship for well over one year with several teenage males and females club members. The texting, according to police, turned sexual as Nguyen allegedly requested nude images and sexual favors.

Nguyen worked as the assistant swim coach at the Quicksilver Swim Club, which uses Gunderson High School facilities. The club was formed in August of 2011 with the merging of the Almaden Swim and Racquet Club (ALMA) and San Jose Aquatics (SJA). At the time, San Jose Aquatics and USA Swimming were facing a sexual abuse lawsuit brought by attorney Robert Allard on behalf of young female swimmer sexually abused by San Jose Aquatics swim coach Andy King. At the time, USA Swimming tried to claim ignorance of King's prior conduct, only for the statement to expose USA Swimming for covering up for King's previous behavior.

According to Nguyen's LinkedIn page, Nguyen apparently served as an age group coach for nearly four years at Quicksilver Swimming. Previously he was the head men's and women's swim coach at Pioneer High School, an assistant varsity swim coach at Notre Dame High School, and a swim coach at Silver Creek Valley Country Club.

Victims of Quicksilver swimming coach Timothy Nguyen are urged to contact attorney Robert Allard at 408-289-1417. Stepping forward may help prevent future sex abuse at this and other swim clubs.
